Dataset of IoT-Based Energy and Environmental Parameters in a Smart Building Infrastructure
Abstract
"Smart-building dataset from the M5 building, including appliance-level energy usage (watts, voltage, kWh) plus temperature, humidity, and occupancy measurements in offices, labs, kitchen, and other spaces.[web:164][web:167][web:170]"
Description
Overview
This Dataset of IoT-Based Energy and Environmental Parameters in a Smart Building Infrastructure was collected as part of a smart campus initiative and covers energy use and environmental conditions in the M5 building of the University of Sharjah.[web:164][web:167][web:170]
Data Collection
- IoT sensors were deployed throughout the building, including energy meters on appliances (e.g., coffee machine, microwave, fridge) and environmental/occupancy sensors in key areas such as labs, kitchen, and mail room.[web:164][web:170]
- Data were recorded from January 1, 2024, to June 20, 2024, capturing typical operational behavior of offices, labs, and communal spaces.[web:167][web:170]
- The dataset includes both raw high‑resolution time series stored and aggregated (e.g., via InfluxDB) and derived representations such as Markov Transition Field (MTF) images for deep learning.[web:167][web:170]
Variables
- Appliance‑specific power data in watts, voltage, and kWh for multiple devices, enabling device‑level load analysis.[web:167][web:170]
- Environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity in different zones of the building.[web:164][web:167][web:170]
- Occupancy rates per monitored area, supporting the study of how human presence affects energy use and indoor climate.[web:167][web:170]
Use Cases
- Research on smart building energy management, including demand forecasting and efficiency optimization.[web:164][web:167][web:170]
- Modeling the relationship between occupancy, environmental conditions, and appliance loads for intelligent HVAC and control strategies.[web:167][web:170]
- Developing deep learning and transfer learning approaches using both raw time series and MTF image representations.[web:167][web:170]
