Smart* Data Set for Sustainability (UMass Smart Homes and Microgrid)
Abstract
"Comprehensive smart energy and environment dataset from three real homes plus a microgrid of 400+ anonymous homes, including electricity usage/generation, environmental conditions, and operational events.[web:97][web:94][web:103]"
Description
Overview
The Smart* Data Set for Sustainability provides real data collected in the UMass Smart* project, aiming to optimize residential energy consumption using IoT sensing and control.[web:97][web:103]
Data Collection
- Includes detailed measurements from three real homes, covering electrical usage and generation, environmental variables, and operational events such as wall switch status.[web:97][web:103]
- Also includes a microgrid data set with minute-level electricity usage for more than 400 anonymous homes.[web:94][web:103]
- Data were collected using in-home monitoring infrastructure and smart meters, representing realistic residential consumption patterns.[web:97][web:94][web:103]
Variables
- Whole-house and circuit-level power consumption; in some cases, appliance-level disaggregation and PV generation.[web:97][web:103]
- Environmental data such as indoor temperature and humidity, plus ambient information around the homes.[web:94][web:103]
- Operational signals, including on/off events and door-opening/closing events for selected homes.[web:94][web:97]
Use Cases
- Home energy disaggregation, load forecasting, and demand-response modeling.[web:97][web:103]
- Design and evaluation of smart home control algorithms for energy efficiency and comfort.[web:94][web:103]
- Microgrid-level analytics on aggregated consumption from hundreds of households.[web:94][web:103]
