Smart* Data Set for Sustainability — 3 Instrumented Homes & 400+ Anonymous Homes
Abstract
"Smart-home energy dataset with detailed electrical, environmental, and operational streams from 3 real homes plus minute-level electricity data from 400+ homes. Open portal export format. Used for sustainable home and demand analysis."
Description
Overview
The Smart* project was created to support research on sustainable homes by collecting rich sensor and energy data from real residential environments. The public release includes detailed data from three deeply instrumented homes and minute-level electricity usage from more than 400 anonymous homes.
Beyond electricity consumption, the dataset includes environmental and operational signals such as temperature, humidity, and wall-switch events. This broader sensing context makes the dataset useful for smart-home control, occupancy-aware analytics, and energy optimization studies.
Column Schema
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| timestamp | Time of the recorded event or measurement. |
| home_id | Identifier for instrumented or anonymous home. |
| power_use_w | Electrical usage measurement. |
| power_gen_w | Electrical generation measurement where available. |
| temperature | Environmental temperature reading. |
| humidity | Environmental humidity reading. |
| switch_event | Operational event such as wall-switch activity. |
Key Statistics
- Total Records: data from 3 real homes plus 400+ anonymous homes
- Features: multiple electrical, environmental, and operational streams
- File Format: portal-accessible structured exports
- File Size: varies by stream and home
- Time Period: multi-deployment residential monitoring
Use Cases
- Smart-home energy optimization and eco-feedback research
- Demand response and residential load profiling
- Context-aware modeling using environmental and operational signals
Source & Attribution
The Smart* dataset was developed by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is mirrored through the Open Energy Hub operated by Oak Ridge National Laboratory. It is widely cited for sustainable home research and residential energy analytics.
